Apparently, if something you order online is:
"Lost by Royal Mail",
that actually means:
"Royal Mail accidentally forwarded your package to your alternate address, even though the redirection service you ordered ended two weeks before the package was shipped".
This can have a strange and interesting plant consequence: a replacement shipment can be sent to you, arriving two days before another package arrives from your alternate address (to which stuff was being redirected) including stuff you forgot to take with you and a mysterious little package that arrived for you after you left.
Summary: I now have two of these, for the price of one.

My flatmates
Feb. 16th, 2009 | 07:46 pm
mood:
cranky
No, it's not because I'm too lazy to cook or don't know how.
It's because my four flatmates are pigs. They all cook three meals a day, separate from each other, and not one of them ever cleans up anything until they need to use it again. That also includes throwing away empty tin cans or milk cartons, as well as disposing of leftover food.
Furthermore, there are enough pots and pans in our kitchen that they only need to use the top layer of dirty dishes, and hence, only the top layer of dirty dishes gets washed. And yes, I am actually saying that there are layers. Every inch of counter space in my kitchen is filled with dirty dishes, leftover food and general gunk.
So the reason why I rarely cook dinner for myself is quite frankly that I am disgusted with the state of the kitchen.
With a clear risk of sounding like an emo teenager: I hate my flatmates.
EDIT: But it's all okay. I love Rabia.

2008! Presidential election! I'm 19 years old, and I get to vote!
Except no one told me that the registering-to-vote process has to be done on paper (by mail), and that I had to register within 30 days of the election...
I guess, at the very least, if "my" candidate wins and turn out to be a complete ditz, I can say I didn't vote for him.

A brief meme between lectures
Sep. 25th, 2008 | 03:25 pm
2. Open the book to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
Now, just after sundown, when all my work was over, and I was on my way to my berth, it occured to me that I should like an apple. I ran on deck. The watch was all forward looking out for the island. The man at the helm was watching the luff of the sail, and whistling away gently to himself; and that was the only sound excepting the swish of the sea against the bows and around the sides of the ship.
In I got bodily into the apple barrel, and found there was scarce an apple left; but, sitting down there in the dark, what with the sound of the waters and the rocking movement of the ship, I had either fallen asleep, or was on the point of doing so, when a heavy man sat down with rather a clash close by. The barrel shook as he leaned his shoulders against it, and I was just about to jump up when the man began to speak. It was Silver's voice, and, before I had heard a dozen words, I would not have shown myself for all the world, but lay there, trembling and listening, in the extreme of fear and curiosity; for from these dozen words I understood that the lives of all the honest men aboard depended upon me alone.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Very snugly placed, those instructions. The indicated seven sentences were exactly the last two paragraphs of chapter X.

A humble question
Jul. 8th, 2008 | 11:37 am
Do you have any recommendations, hints, tips or general guidance as to selecting a mobile phone plan? I've been looking over some of them, but since I'm not familiar with the general price level of the UK, I find it very difficult to evaluate the plans I've been looking at.
Any help would be much appreciated.

How the IB turned out for me
Jul. 7th, 2008 | 02:22 pm
mood:
grump
The day the IB results of May 2008 were released, that is. I suppose you're all on the edge of your seats in anticipation by now. *cue crickets*
Anyway, I thought I'd post what I got, just in case you were interested.
Theory of Knowledge A
Mathematics SL 7
Economics SL 7
Norwegian A1 HL 7
Physics SL 6
History HL 6
English A1 HL 5
EE (English A1) C
Total points (including 2 bonus points): 40
Now, the university of Edinburgh (my university of choice) only required that I get 34 points and a 5 in all HL subjects, so I have well more than what I need to get. However, since my subject of choice is English Literature, I think you can understand why I'm still a little disappointed.
On a lighter note: This will be the last post I ever make about the IB and myself!

For now, a quick update on me, conveniently posted in bullet-point form:
- I finished the hell of the IB final exams about a month ago, and will be getting my grades on the 6th of July.
- I accepted an offer from the University of Edinburgh, and unless I screwed up my exams majorly, I will be travelling there in mid-September.
- For now, I have a job at Bianco Footwear in Asker. Yes, I am a shoe salesman.
- I am so far having an absolutely wonderful summer holiday, mostly relaxing with
As I said, larger update to come.

My return to the world of blogging
Feb. 10th, 2008 | 02:04 am
my flist should probably be at skip=160 or something by now, but for some reason, it won't show anything past skip=80, which is about January 28th. If there was anything important posted before then that I haven't read, please let me know.
Now, I'll just get started on catching up.

New Year's thing
Jan. 1st, 2008 | 11:53 pm
Also, seeing as a new issue has just been published, I feel it is in order to direct everyone's attention (if it's not already there) to the amazingness that is Don't Look. Download, print out, read to your heart's desire, and pass it along to all your friends.
Ta-ta for now!

For those of you who don't know, my surname is spelled with an Æ, which does not exist in the English alphabet. What the UCAS system did was to simply remove the letter, rather than replacing it with AE, as is more commonly done.
I was a bit worried that that might be a problem when the time came to actually recieve/accept university offers, but today, I got a message from the admissions officer at the University College of London, where she said that she would take care of informing UCAS and the other universities of my misspelt name, if it really was misspelt (she got the suspicion that it was from my email adress, in which the name is spelled with AE).
So that took care of my worries.
More importantly, the email began with the following sentence:
"We are pleased to tell you that UCL intends to make you the offer of
a place on the BA in English."
I'm going to university next fall. Yay!

A song of procrastination
Nov. 23rd, 2007 | 04:08 pm
location: bed
mood:
calm
But it's true. I never expected to get in, so I'm not really disappointed. Which makes it all the more amusing to read Dr M write "I do realise how disappointing this will be for you and I am sorry not to have better news regarding your application here."
In other news, THIMUN research report due by today. I'm nowhere near ready. And I just had cake. And it's kind of amusing not having the key to one's own locker at school. Ooh, and new icons too!yay
ETA: I have also just posted some of the things I have written in my notebook over the last year or so in my other journal,
- What remains
- Different
- When the world is passing by you
- Safety on Board
- The World Reflected
- Her
- Remembering the Feeling

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of 30 September 2007).
As usual, bold what you have read, italicise what you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. Add an asterisk to those you've read more than once. Underline those on your to-read list.
